Business Lessons I’ve Learned from my Sisters

I come from a family of entrepreneurs. My father, a natural-born teacher, had an English Medium High School in TY. My mother was a retailer for most of her life. It was through business and business alone that they were able to send four children to school and maintain a household. My sisters have carried on the family tradition and, though I could be biased, are some of the most accomplished and inspiring businesswomen I’ve ever known. I learn a lot from the way that they do business and I have decided to share their secrets with you:

  1. Good things come to those who wait wake up really early

Every morning when I take a walk, I marvel at just how many shops aren’t open. People are already making their way to work at 6 am, yet most tuckshops are closed. My sister Tseli opens up her hair salon, The Beautyroom, at 6 am to make sure that her customer makes it to work looking and feeling their best. You will be surprised at how many people actually prefer to visit hair salons before 8.

  2. Business is the main hustle

A lot of people look at business as a side hustle, even when they’re unemployed. Well, that is not the case in my family. Business is what they do for a living. Their success comes from their undivided attention to their businesses, knowing that they don’t have a second option.

  3. Not all projects should be for-profit

I’ve seen my sister Thaby, more than a few times, carrying out breathtaking events that wouldn’t give her a cent in profit. Some of her M&C Lifestyle Events are merely for exposure; a necessary investment for better events in the future. Know when it’s time to make a similar sacrifice for your business. Every once in a while, don’t chase the profit too much but be careful not to run a loss either.

I could sit here all day and talk about how my sisters do business but, I truly believe that these are what keep them at the top of their game.
