Host the Perfect (Virtual) Dinner Date
One winter night, shortly after the long Covid-19 lockdowns, I had a virtual dinner with a friend. I was immediately taken by the unexpected intimacy of it. A traditional girl like me usually prefers the old fashioned way of doing things. But it felt better than most ‘in-person’ dinners that I’d been to. I might even go to as far as recommending that you try a virtual first date.
During a virtual dinner, the focus is primarily on conversation and interaction. With fewer distractions and the focus on the screen, it can create a more concentrated, intimate setting for conversation. Actually eating together can create a sense of togetherness and shared experience, fostering intimacy. So, whether you’re looking to add a interesting spin to your love life or that your significant other is away in another country, here’s how to curate the perfect virtual dinner date:
Choose the right platform
Opt for a reliable and user-friendly video chat platform that both of you are comfortable using. Make sure that your wi-fi is reliable as well. Be sure to back it up with mobile data.
Set the Mood
Create a cozy ambiance by adjusting lighting, adding candles (you especially need these if you live in South Africa), or using soft background music to set the tone. Try my jazz playlist here. Make an effort to dress nicely. It helps create a sense of occasion and shows your enthusiasm for the date. Put on some makeup and wear your favourite fragrance. It’s not just about your date, it’s about you as well, you have to feel your best. Also, being in your own space makes us feel comfortable and more willing to open up.
Share a recipe
Try cooking together. Share a recipe that you both would like and prepare the same meal while on a video call. Preferably, pick a delicious recipe that’s easy to make like this Creamy Pasta & Salmon.
Meaningful Conversations
Like any normal date, plan conversation starters or topics to keep the dialogue flowing. Ask open-ended questions to learn more about each other's thoughts and feelings.
Surprise Element
Incorporate surprises such as sending a digital gift or organizing a special activity during the date to add excitement.
Allow yourself to be human… and a little messy
Of course you are trying to impress your date but, don’t worry about making it too perfect. Don’t go all out to hire studio lights and microphones if don’t already own them. Make just enough effort and then show up as yourself. You are going to have a magical experience.
A successful virtual date night is about creating an atmosphere that fosters connection, genuine conversation, and shared experiences, in-spite of the physical distance. Flexibility, creativity, and genuine interest in your partner's experience are going to make your dinner date enjoyable and memorable. So go ahead, embrace this fine modern changes and, my dear reader, happy dinning!
